Every single human being on earth likes stories, needless to say children. So why not use them to teach numbers?
Every time my 5 year-old students see me walking around at school with a book in my hands they think it is for them and start asking all kinds of questions about it. They have just started learning English, therefore they are learning the basics, such as colours, numbers, family members, etc.
Since I wanted to revise colours and teach numbers from 1 to 10, I thought it would be a nice idea to do that through a story. I have used Ten Monsters in a Bed by Rozanne Lanczac Williams and my students loved it!!!
Lesson plan
1. Ask students to guess what the picture is by showing them a puzzle piece. Ask them to put the pieces together and check if their guesses were right.
2. Tell them the story by using puppets (cut the monsters and glue lollipop sticks on them) and ask them questions about colours and teach them numbers by counting the monsters. You can tell the story including the vocabulary you want, I have used colours (... the blue one said).
3. Ask ss to count school objects, students, desks, etc.
4. Show them the bed handout and ask them to draw ten monsters.
5. Ask ss to make playdough monsters.
6. Ask ss to watch the video and act it out using their playdough monsters.
7. Ask them to watch the video and act it out. They loved it!!!
